This Spiced Apple Crisp Pie combines the traditional flavors of American apple pie with a crunchy, buttery pecan crumble, offering a comforting and wholesome treat perfect for any occasion. Inspired by the lush orchards of the Hudson Valley in New York.

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) peeled, cored, and sliced thinly
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Pecan Crumble

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter melted

For the Pie Crust

  • 1 pre-made pie crust store-bought or homemade

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Place the pre-made pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim and crimp the edges as desired.
  • In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Toss until the apples are well coated.
  • Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, chopped pecans, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  • Pour in the melted butter and mix until the mixture becomes crumbly and holds together when pressed.
  • Sprinkle the pecan crumble evenly over the apple filling, covering the entire surface.
  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. If the crust edges start to brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil.
  • Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Pairing Suggestions

Apples are rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, contributing to overall health and well-being. Pecans in the crumble topping provide healthy fats, protein, and essential vitamins. This recipe is entirely vegetarian and quick to prepare, making it perfect for any occasion.

Special Tip

For an extra burst of flavor, lightly toast the pecans in a dry skillet for a few minutes until fragrant before chopping and adding them to the crumble mixture. This enhances their nuttiness and adds an extra layer of complexity to the topping.
